People Are Cracking Up At These 50 Medieval Memes Made By A History Professor
October 7, 2024
While memes might seem synonymous with modern life in general and the internet in particular, they are just one of the ways we try to encapsulate a feeling or mood in something that’s easy to share. But truth be told, our ancestors were not that different from us in many ways.
The “Medievalist Matt” Instagram page is dedicated to everything from interesting facts to hilarious and relatable memes. We got in touch with its admin and creator, Matthew Ponesse, Professor of History at Ohio Dominican University, to learn more. So get comfortable as you scroll through, upvote your favorites and be sure to share your own thoughts in the comments section below.

Bored Panda got in touch with Matthew Ponesse, Professor of History at Ohio Dominican University who created and still runs the page. Given that it has thousands and thousands of followers, we wanted to hear his opinion on what makes it so popular.
“I think humor is the main attraction. There is so much stress and anxiety in our daily lives. I think my page offers a bit of relief from the daily challenges that we all face. Secondly, the nature of communication has changed drastically in the last decade. People value memes not only as a source of entertainment, but for how they respond to current events or social phenomena.”

“Memes provide a light-hearted or irreverent commentary on the issues of our day. I try to stay on top of current affairs and cultural changes, and occasionally respond to them through my memes. Lastly, I think people are fascinated by the unknown. There is much about the Middle Ages that people are unfamiliar with. When brought into contact with our culture, medieval ideas and images can appear bizarre, strange, and hilarious, especially when taken out of context.”

Naturally, we wanted to hear more about why he chose to focus on the Medieval ages in particular. “When I was younger, I was fascinated by the differences of medieval life. Castles and knights, serfs and peasants, pilgrims and heretics. It all seemed so fantastic and otherworldly. However, as I came to learn about the Middle Ages, I began to notice how very little humans have changed over time.”

“We still ponder the same questions, cultivate the same ambitions, and attempt to overcome the same challenges. Now, I take delight in how familiar it all is. Perhaps this is why my memes are relatively successful. I approach medieval art as a reflection of our own world. I may exaggerate the connections at times, or perhaps see things that are clearly not intended. But my motivation is to connect the past and the present in a meaningful way.”

Many of us have a picture of what the Medieval ages were like, but it’s generally a mishmash of outdated ideas and Hollywood cliches, so we wanted to hear some common misconceptions Matthew has encountered when it comes to the past. “The greatest misconception I have encountered is that the medieval period was a dark age characterized by ignorance, superstition, chronic warfare, abusive leaders, and a church opposed to new ideas and progress.”

“When you study the Middle Ages, you can’t help but appreciate the vitality of its peoples and the richness of their cultures. This was a dynamic time filled with growth, innovation, and scientific advancement,” he shared with Bored Panda.

“Cities flourished, cathedral spires reached the sky, scholars advanced our understanding of the world, and merchants and traders flourished. True, there was war and disease. Yes, injustice occurred (as it continues to today). But characterizing the Middle Ages as a time of darkness misses the real story.”

He had a few last thoughts. “People sometimes tell me that a particular meme made them laugh out loud in an inappropriate place like a doctor’s office or a meeting, and that the whole room turned to look at them strangely. I just want everyone to know that I consider this greatest compliment.”

50 Classical Art Paintings That Sum Up Humanity In A Meme Format
July 7, 2024
We live for witty and high-quality memes. They provide a wonderful break from many of life’s problems. Not only that, but they can be quite educational as well if you’re willing to look beyond the surface and do a little bit of solo research about art and history.
The ‘Classical Sarcasm’ social media project is truly an internet gem. It has been making people laugh for years by combining classical art with relatable modern quips. Today, we’re featuring some of the most hilarious memes, as shared on the project’s Facebook group, ‘Classical Sarcasm – Classical Art Memes.’ Scroll down for a good laugh, and don’t forget to upvote your fave pics!
Bored Panda got in touch with the friendly team running the entire social media project, and they were happy to answer our questions. Check out what they told us below!

We reached out to the team behind ‘Classical Sarcasm’ and all of its projects. One of the members of the team was kind enough to share their thoughts on everything.
They explained to us that the ‘Classical Sarcasm’ account has been up and running all the way since 2019.
We were curious to get their take as to why the project has been so successful over the years. “It’s been growing because of the unique content created every day,” the representative told Bored Panda.
#2

“Everyday struggles are the reason why so many young and old followers are enjoying the memes,” they shared their perspective.
Bored Panda asked the ‘Classical Sarcasm’ team member whether they think that the content they share helps others appreciate classical art more. They believe so! In their opinion, social media has a very positive impact in this regard.
“Surely, classical art was almost forgotten without social media! Every painting has a story behind it, and those stories are being told with every meme we make,” the representative said.

Meanwhile, they had some advice for anyone hoping to create high-quality memes using classical art as templates.
“Just be creative, and let your imagination make someone laugh.” On top of that, they explained to Bored Panda that there’s no such thing as ‘bad’ memes because everything’s so subjective. “Every person looks at memes from a different angle.”
The ‘Classical Sarcasm’ project is extremely well known on social media. It’s incredibly likely that you’ve seen some of its memes on your feed, whether shared by the original account itself or reposted by someone who’s a big fan of the content.
At the time of writing, the’ Classical Sarcasm’ Instagram account boasts 128k followers. Its Facebook page has a jaw-dropping 728k followers. Meanwhile, the Facebook group is home to 560k members from all over the globe.

In order to spread, memes have to be relatable. At least on some level. The beauty of ‘Classical Sarcasm’ is despite the fact that not everyone is an art historian or a fan of galleries, they can still vibe with the emotions, expressions, and comments portrayed in the images.
The added layer of humor further elevates the quality of the meme, and makes you more likely to (re)share it with the people you care about. And that’s how this unique combination of art and sarcasm has carved out such a popular niche for itself.

During a previous interview, Bored Panda spoke to the founder of the entire ‘Classical Sarcasm’ project, Adnan Cirak, from Bosnia and Herzegovina. “My inspiration is to promote art and also young artists who are painters and creators,” he told us earlier, adding that art memes help break cultural barriers, as his pages are followed worldwide.
“The success behind the page is original content and constant hard work. My team consists of me and my parents,” Adnan told Bored Panda about how integral his mom, Sifa, and his dad, Sefik, really are to the project’s popularity. Aside from the ‘Classical Sarcasm’ Instagram account, Facebook page, and Facebook group, they also run a couple of similar Instagram pages.

“Paintings are perfect [templates for memes] because they all have a story behind [them]. Also, everyone has an opportunity to tell the story in their own way,” the founder shared with us.
According to him, a core part of the appeal is the freedom to interpret things as one sees them. Not only does this apply to the works of art featured in the images but to the memes, too.
“When creating memes, I just need to look at one painting, and immediately, the brainstorming starts in my head. Also, many followers are sending their own creations. I’m so proud that my page has motivated so many people to express their own creativity.”
According to Adnan, he’s open to all young artists and companies to work together. Anyone who’s interested can contact him via the email he has shared publicly on his Facebook page.

One art historian previously explained to Bored Panda that many people have a wrong assumption about art history. They believe that it’s incredibly serious and important, which, in turn, leads to them feeling overwhelmed with the very idea of digging deeper into it.
That, however, isn’t true. Art history, according to the historian, is basically just old memes full of humor and humanity.

Meanwhile, an art expert, who previously headed a gallery, told us earlier that many people find art history intimidating exactly because it’s not taught in schools. The reality is that it’s not inaccessible despite being viewed as hard to grasp. Broadly speaking, people tend to feel intimidated by things that they aren’t experts in.
#22

#24

Art, according to the expert, can feel intimidating for some individuals because there’s an element of subjectivity to it that’s not found in subjects like, for example, math. A good way to get more people into art and art history is to democratize it: the subjects should be made accessible to individuals, no matter their background.
That, in turn, should make the subjects less scary and ephemeral. The point is to discuss and create art, not to be ‘right’ with your opinions. It’s about self-expression, emotions, and opinions.

Doja Cat Showed Up In Nothing But A Towel To 2024 Met Gala After Strolling NYC In A Bed Sheet
May 7, 2024
Doja Cat is no stranger to controversial looks. After all, she showed up to last year’s gala as Karl Lagerfeld’s cat. This year, though, she’s pushed the limits that much harder.
For the 2024 Met Gala, the dress code of which is “The Garden of Time,” the pop star showed up in nothing but a white towel.

Fans have already expressed exasperation with this year’s looks, blasting many of the outfits for failing the theme or being too boring. It’s yet to be seen how Doja Cat will connect a bath towel with “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” but no one can accuse the “Say So” singer of dressing boring.

In fact, just yesterday the rapper was spotted at a New York Cartier store wearing what appeared to be a bedsheet. Fans were quick to mock the 28-year-old, saying things like “What in the Bed Bath & Beyond is going on?”
Viewers have been similarly ruthless with the star’s Met Gala look. “Doja Cat shows up in a towel from Amazon,” said one person. “Is her bathroom near the place?” said another.
Others were just wondering if she was taking stuff from the hotel.

“The Absolute Best Of The Best”: 40 Of The Most Talented People
April 7, 2024
The internet is home to many of skilled people. From woodworkers and jewelers to comics artists and beyond, it’s the platform to show off what you’ve been practicing and connect with audiences from all over the world.
But with so much content, we need someone to curate it. Luckily, the subreddit ‘Top Talent’ is on a mission to showcase the best of the best. It has 2.9 million members collecting footage of the coolest things humans can do, inspiring awe and admiration for everyone who visits them.
Continue scrolling to explore it all, including our conversation with Manhattan psychotherapist and performance coach Jonathan Alpert. You’ll find it nestled in between the images.

In recent years, talks about personal accomplishments have been increasingly echoing the term growth mindset. According to the idea, it’s the constant, incremental improvement that leads to success.
In other words, if you focus on perfecting the process instead of chasing results, the latter will naturally follow as a byproduct of your dedication.
So if you started working on a new project with expensive materials and little room for mistakes, it could be helpful to break down the task into smaller, manageable steps, providing yourself with opportunities to learn and improve along the way.

“All too often people when preparing for an event or performance think about all that could go wrong,” psychotherapist and performance coach Jonathan Alpert told Bored Panda. “That only muddies their mindset, interfering with focus, and distracts them.”
“Instead, focus on strengths — what do you bring to the event or performance? — that is the many weeks or even years of preparation, and the desire to achieve success, and expertise,” the author of ‘Be Fearless: Change Your Life in 28 Days‘ added.

Alpert, who works with many elite performers and leaders, suggests to “play it out in your mind and visualize the steps you will take on your big day.”
“When you start to doubt yourself that only destabilizes your belief in yourself. Think of your belief as a table top with four legs. When you feel doubtful it is the equivalent of going over that table, grabbing a leg, and shaking it — it will make that table top (belief) less strong and less stable because you introduce negative thoughts into your mindset,” he explained.

However, it’s not just the preparation for and your performance that matter. You can also incorporate rituals or practices after you’re done with it to improve further.
“It’s not a bad idea to review your performance and try to understand what went well and what areas to work on,” Alpert said.
“A performance can be diagnostic in some ways as it reveals what can be done to improve your game. Don’t see any area of deficiency as a weakness, but rather as an opportunity for improvement that will make you stronger.”

‘You Had One Job’: 50 Hilarious Fails That People Couldn’t Help Sharing
January 7, 2024
Nobody’s ever entirely sure why these things happen, but they do and it’s both annoying and hilarious. Annoying for those who have to suffer the direct consequences (or those who empathize with said consequences) and hilarious for everyone else.
By that, we do of course mean instances when people had just one single job to do and they managed to blunder it up in the worst ways imaginable. And of course it was all documented online because the internet. You know what to do.
#1

#2

#3

So, why are folks seemingly deliberately bad at their job? There are a number of reasons behind this.
The most clear-cut explanation is that the person is completely incompetent and is thinking with anything else other than their brain. And, sometimes, training and onboarding as well as meetings don’t really help. Because there is no cure for stupid. Well, education is, but you gotta consider the cost-benefit ratio.
#4

#5

#6

Another thing that makes someone a bad employee is their tendency to do a no-show. What is worse is when they are also unreachable. Calling in, not picking up the phone, not responding to communication—all of these mean that the worker is irresponsible and not committed to the job they’ve been hired to do. Sometimes, things like addiction might complicate things further.
#7

#8

#9

Some folks are also compulsive or habitual liars. Either that, or they always have an excuse up their sleeves. Regardless, someone who’d rather lie or make excuses instead of doing a job right, doing it at all, or learning to do it and making something of themselves is a time-waster from a business perspective.
People like this don’t take responsibility for their actions, but work is something that demands taking ownership, so this is another incompatibility that leads to poor results.
#10

#11

#12

Sometimes, people might be careless by nature and fail to follow directions right from the get-go. Now, it might be a simple case of “I didn’t read it” and doing so might resolve the issue, but some might not have the aptitude to internalize it and would continue to make the same mistakes. In turn, their lack of consideration, ignoring protocol and taking shortcuts leads to headaches for everyone else.
#13

#14

#15

And, sometimes, it’s just the case of a bad attitude. They don’t give a gaw-giggity about the customers, the merchandise, the quality, nothing. This often means they are unwilling to collaborate, let alone to do a good job, and even more so when their arrogance and asocialism doesn’t allow them to draw the right conclusions and to become better employees.
#16

#17

#18

Besides being innately bad, there might also be external factors for why someone is bad at their job.
Being poorly paid is at the top of the list, but it becomes worse when the employee also feels like they are stuck there having to suffer the bad paycheck without any exit strategy.
#19

#20

#21

Having a bad boss, being overly managed and underappreciated do not help in the quality of the work being done. Why do a good job if the boss isn’t going to be happy about it anyway? Either that, or it’s about quantity, not quality that pushes employees to assume different work priorities. That also likely kills the passion for work somewhere along the way.
#22

#23

#24

There might also be other factors at play—factors like being stuck with poor job security or not being able to sort out your work-life balance.
An employee will never be a good one if their needs aren’t met to a sufficient degree, and that means reassuring them that their job is not at stake and encouraging self-care rather than min-maxing how things are done.
#25

#27

And if it’s none of the above, chances are it’s laziness.
While laziness breeds more laziness and it can become a habit, habits can also be broken. It’s not something people are born with, but rather a behavior that can be phased out. The idea is to learn to be industrious: do things that energize you (sleep, exercise, etc.), work first and reward yourself later, and visualize productiveness (make it tangible and reflect upon it). That’s at least a good start.
