The “Medievalist Matt” Instagram page is dedicated to everything from interesting facts to hilarious and relatable memes. We got in touch with its admin and creator, Matthew Ponesse, Professor of History at Ohio Dominican University, to learn more. Bored Panda got in touch with Matthew Ponesse, Professor of History at Ohio Dominican University who created and still runs the page. Given that it has thousands and thousands of followers, we wanted to hear his opinion on what makes it so popular.

“I think humor is the main attraction. There is so much stress and anxiety in our daily lives. I think my page offers a bit of relief from the daily challenges that we all face. Secondly, the nature of communication has changed drastically in the last decade. People value memes not only as a source of entertainment, but for how they respond to current events or social phenomena.”

“Memes provide a light-hearted or irreverent commentary on the issues of our day. I try to stay on top of current affairs and cultural changes, and occasionally respond to them through my memes. Lastly, I think people are fascinated by the unknown. There is much about the Middle Ages that people are unfamiliar with. When brought into contact with our culture, medieval ideas and images can appear bizarre, strange, and hilarious, especially when taken out of context.”

Castles and knights, serfs and peasants, pilgrims and heretics. It all seemed so fantastic and otherworldly. However, as I came to learn about the Middle Ages, I began to notice how very little humans have changed over time.”

Terrifying Simulation Reveals What Would Happen To Your Body If Swallowed By A Whale

The odds of being sucked into a whale’s mouth are one in a million. By nature, these mammals are very docile, and there has never been a true report of them eating a human.

But if, for some reason, a whale mistook a diver for an animal in their diet and swallowed them whole, the probability of survival would plummet to zero.

A video created by Zack D. Films explores the almost impossible situation, showing the reality of being digested alive.

The animated short was released one month ago but has already amassed more than 40 million views, with users imagining the “completely pitch black” scenario as terrifying.

A human would be killed almost immediately upon entering their digestive tract

After getting swallowed by a sperm whale, you’d immediately be compressed inside its massive throat and plunged into pitch-black darkness, according to the simulation video. Later, you’d pass through its esophagus.

Once you’ve made it past the narrow pathway, gravity would take you down into a series of one of four stomach chambers, based on the anatomy of a sperm whale. Depending on the species, the number of chambers varies, but either way, you wouldn’t make it out of the first one alive.

Digestive acids can be found in the mammal’s stomach chambers, and the moment a human’s skin comes into contact with it, their entire body will start to break down and their skin will burn.

And by some miracle, if you manage to avoid the acid, the lack of air inside the whale would quickly cause you to suffocate.

Scientifically speaking, a human would die within minutes and be digested like any other prey hunted by the sperm whale.

The size of a whale’s throat varies, from the width of a basketball to a human fist, and most whales would not be able to swallow a person.

Under the right circumstances, however, the only species of whale that could swallow a human whole is the sperm whale.

With a regular diet of large prey, such as giant squid and octopus, their throats are relatively big. Although, this isn’t a cause for concern among humans.

Sperm whales have one of the widest global distributions of any marine mammal species, spanning from the equator to the edges of the Arctic and Antarctica. And because they only frequent depths of 2,000 feet or below, the likelihood of a human encountering a sperm whale is zero to none.

From the surface, they’re most recognizable by their giant heads. They may not be the biggest mammals on Earth, but they have the largest brains, with an average of 7.8 kg of brain mass in males. For comparison, the mass of a humpback whale’s brain is about 4.6 kg.

A sperm whale’s head can represent a third of their total body length, which can be up to 60 feet long. Their blowholes are also located on a slight diagonal on the left side of their heads.

People started posing hypothetical questions after the widespread story of a 19th-century tale

In 1891, James Bartley of St. Louis, Missouri, came back home with a sensational story to tell.

According to the news reports at the time, Bartley was a young sailor who was swallowed by a sperm whale. The next day, the same whale was killed, and his belly was cut open. Bartley popped out, blind and injured by corrosive stomach acid but miraculously alive.

This alleged incident unfolded in February 1891 about two hundred miles east of the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean.

A whaling ship named Star of the East was on the lookout when a sperm whale was spotted about 3 miles away. The ship lowered two small boats, which later began to race with the whale.

When one of the crew leaned over to drive a weapon into the whale, it started thrashing, which sent the passengers on the smaller boats into the water. As the crew later looked to rescue the sailors, Bartley was missing.

After killing the whale and discovering that something was moving inside the mammal’s stomach, they cut the organ open, only to find Bartley, who had been inside for 15 hours. His skin was bleached a deathly white from its digestive juices, and the sailor was blind and had lost most of his hair.

But the young sailor had survived — something that should have been physically impossible.

While Bartley’s story was widely accepted and talked about, it may just be a made-up myth. According to Amusing Planet, Historian Edward B. Davis said that while there was a British ship by the name of Star of the East, it wasn’t near the Falklands at the time of the incident, and there was certainly no James Bartley on its crew.

With the lack of air inside a whale’s body and its corrosive gastric acid, there is no way James Bartley, now referred to as “Modern Day Jonah,” could have made it out alive.

The Eden Killer Whale Museum in New South Wales has added, as accounted by Bartley’s story, that a sperm whale inhales deeply before diving, storing oxygen in its body. This raised the question: “Could it be that James Bartley survived through the storing up of oxygen?”

The answer is no. But if the museum believed it a possibility for 100 years, then it’s no surprise the media did, too.

The Internet community was quick to comment on the absurdity of the scenario.

One comment said, “I’m glad people are using technology to answer the important questions,” while another joked, “Going on past experiences, it’s nothing like this.”

Others mentioned James Bartley by his biblical name.

“FYI Jonah was swallowed by a fish. We don’t know the species. And for all we know, God could have created it specifically to be able to hold someone in its belly without harming it,” a user said.

Long flowing locks, a strong physique and a thick mustache—that’s apparently the internet’s idea of a stereotypical Australian male look, as Ethan Katzberg, Olympic gold medal winner for hammer toss recently found out after fans started tweeting about his striking appearance.

“Nah I want a DNA test, this man is clearly Australian,” wrote one viewer after the Canadian athlete secured his victory with an astounding 84.112 meters throw last Sunday (August 4,) well ahead of his competitors, Hungary’s Bence Halász and Ukraine’s Mykhaylo Kokhan, who scored 79.97 meters and 79.39 meters respectively.

“I don’t think I expected it, but I had the preparation in mind to get a good round on the first throw, and to throw 84 meters felt really good,” Katzberg said in a post-performance interview.

The 22-year-old champion granted his home country their first ever Olympic gold medal in hammer throw.

“We’re absolutely thrilled for Ethan,” said Wanda Urbanowicz in an interview with GlobalNews Canada. Wanda is a coach from the Nanaimo Track and Field Club where Katzberg trains

“As a coach in the club I’ve been able to watch him develop since he was in 8th grade. His dad, who specializes in hammer throw, pushed him to follow in his steps, but before that he tried his hand at many disciplines like hurdles, race walk, high jump. He was always training,” she recounted.

“Even in winter. I recall seeing him shoveling snow off the tracks so that he could practice a few throws before hitting the weights.

“The amount of work that went into this achievement is incredible. It’s hard to put into words how it feels to see an athlete go from [an initial] level, all the way to the pinnacle of Olympic gold,” the coach explained.

As a representative of Canada, Katzberg won gold medals in the 2023 Budapest World Championships and the 2023 Santiago Pan American Games. He also won silver in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

His fellow Canadian celebrated on social media as others joked about his striking appearance, which he shares with another athlete from the same country: Rowan Hamilton

Meanwhile, they had some advice for anyone hoping to create high-quality memes using classical art as templates.

“Just be creative, and let your imagination make someone laugh.” On top of that, they explained to Bored Panda that there’s no such thing as ‘bad’ memes because everything’s so subjective. “Every person looks at memes from a different angle.”

The ‘Classical Sarcasm’ project is extremely well known on social media. It’s incredibly likely that you’ve seen some of its memes on your feed, whether shared by the original account itself or reposted by someone who’s a big fan of the content.

At the time of writing, the’ Classical Sarcasm’ Instagram account boasts 128k followers. Its Facebook page has a jaw-dropping 728k followers. Meanwhile, the Facebook group is home to 560k members from all over the globe.

During a previous interview, Bored Panda spoke to the founder of the entire ‘Classical Sarcasm’ project, Adnan Cirak, from Bosnia and Herzegovina. “My inspiration is to promote art and also young artists who are painters and creators,” he told us earlier, adding that art memes help break cultural barriers, as his pages are followed worldwide.

“The success behind the page is original content and constant hard work. My team consists of me and my parents,” Adnan told Bored Panda about how integral his mom, Sifa, and his dad, Sefik, really are to the project’s popularity. Aside from the ‘Classical Sarcasm’ Instagram account, Facebook page, and Facebook group, they also run a couple of similar Instagram pages.

“Paintings are perfect [templates for memes] because they all have a story behind [them]. Also, everyone has an opportunity to tell the story in their own way,” the founder shared with us.

According to him, a core part of the appeal is the freedom to interpret things as one sees them. Not only does this apply to the works of art featured in the images but to the memes, too.

“When creating memes, I just need to look at one painting, and immediately, the brainstorming starts in my head. Also, many followers are sending their own creations. I’m so proud that my page has motivated so many people to express their own creativity.”

One art historian previously explained to Bored Panda that many people have a wrong assumption about art history. They believe that it’s incredibly serious and important, which, in turn, leads to them feeling overwhelmed with the very idea of digging deeper into it.

Art, according to the expert, can feel intimidating for some individuals because there’s an element of subjectivity to it that’s not found in subjects like, for example, math. A good way to get more people into art and art history is to democratize it: the subjects should be made accessible to individuals, no matter their background.

That, in turn, should make the subjects less scary and ephemeral. The point is to discuss and create art, not to be ‘right’ with your opinions. It’s about self-expression, emotions, and opinions.

Celebrities Who Had Enough Of Beauty Standards And Embraced Their Body Hair

Hair removal in women has long been linked with ideals of femininity and sexual appeal. Rebecca Herzig, author of Plucked: A History of Hair Removal, traces back the modern-day notion of body hair being unattractive in women to Charles Darwin’s 1871 book Descent of a Man.

But why was the 19th-century idea about hairiness bringing “sexual inversion, disease pathology, lunacy, and criminal violence” not equally applied to all genders? According to Herzig, this had to do with the enforcement of “gendered social control” at a time when women were having a more prominent role in society.

Fast forward to the 21st century, when many women are increasingly challenging this cultural norm by choosing to control their own bodies and how they display them.

While some do so in private, others are bold enough to flaunt their natural body hair in front of millions, throwing historical beauty standards out the window to prioritize their comfort.

#1 Drew Barrymore

The 50 First Dates actress made a statement as she posed at the Fall Olympus Fashion Week in 2005.

Drew stunned in a look consisting of pink lips, lilac eyeshadow, and a tight V-neck dress that revealed her underarm hair.

#2 Gigi Hadid

Gigi flaunted her armpit hair when she was featured on Love Magazine’s 2017 advent calendar.

The IMG supermodel impacted the Internet when she went au naturel for the sporty shot, which many interpreted as a nod to the body hair acceptance movement.

#3 Julia Roberts

“The picture is vivid in my mind actually from that moment,” the Oscar winner said about her much-talked-about look at the London premiere of Notting Hill in 1999.

While people interpreted the armpit hair as a statement about strict (and painful) beauty standards for women, Julia said she considered it more of a fashion faux pas.

“I think I just hadn’t really calculated my sleeve length and the waving and how those two things would go together and reveal personal things about me.

“So it wasn’t so much a statement as it’s just part of the statement I make as a human on the planet, for myself.”

Still, many women celebrated this moment because, on such a memorable night for her career, a high-profile figure like Julia Roberts normalized what a woman’s natural body looks like.

The Queen of Pop summarized her attitude toward the expected beauty standards for women with four words: “Long hair … don’t care!”

In 2014, Madonna challenged the body hair stigma with an Instagram photo in lingerie that exposed her unshaven armpit.

“I saw how popular girls had to behave to get the boys. I knew I couldn’t fit into that. So, I decided to do the opposite. I refused to wear makeup or have a hairstyle. I refused to shave. I had hairy armpits,” the icon told Harper’s Bazaar in 2011.

In 2015, Miley took to the stage of the amfAR Gala to accept the Award of Inspiration, which she received for her fight against HIV/AIDS. The Flowers singer opted for a tight red dress with sequin hearts and matching opera gloves.

Alpert, who works with many elite performers and leaders, suggests to “play it out in your mind and visualize the steps you will take on your big day.”

“When you start to doubt yourself that only destabilizes your belief in yourself. Think of your belief as a table top with four legs. When you feel doubtful it is the equivalent of going over that table, grabbing a leg, and shaking it — it will make that table top (belief) less strong and less stable because you introduce negative thoughts into your mindset,” he explained.

However, it’s not just the preparation for and your performance that matter. You can also incorporate rituals or practices after you’re done with it to improve further.

“It’s not a bad idea to review your performance and try to understand what went well and what areas to work on,” Alpert said.

“A performance can be diagnostic in some ways as it reveals what can be done to improve your game. Don’t see any area of deficiency as a weakness, but rather as an opportunity for improvement that will make you stronger.”

Pop-Tarts Demands Secret Recipe After Taylor Swift Bakes For Kansas City Chiefs

Pop-Tarts has taken a delicious dive into the world of pop music, and to everyone’s delight, it has hitmaker Taylor Swift involved.

The Kellanova-owned snack maker has released a public plea — so public that they took a full-page ad in a newspaper for it — asking Taylor to release the recipe of her homemade Pop-Tarts pastry.

To make sure their plea was heard by the masses, Pop-Tarts used a full-page ad in The Kansas City Star’s Friday print and e-Editions, where the company said they were “tortured” not knowing more about Taylor’s version of the baked goods. Does it have a special filing? Does it have frosting? Pop-Tarts begged to know.

“To KC’s most famous fan. We heard you have a Pop-Tarts pastry recipe,” read the message on the ad.

“We’re tortured not knowing more about this DIY delight. What’s the filling? Does it have frosting? Do they have little holes?” the company said, clearly unable to contain their curiosity just like the rest of the eager Swifties across the world.

The buzz around Taylor’s special Pop-Tarts began after the Kansas City Chiefs’ coach, Andy Reid, spoke about how the Love Story singer captured the hearts of her boyfriend Travis Kelce‘s teammates by baking for them.

“Kind of behind-the-scenes, she, to fit in — she didn’t even know she was doing this, I don’t think — she likes to cook, so she made the offensive linemen homemade Pop-Tarts,” the coach said on an episode of NFL by NBC.

When hosts Mike Florio and Chris Simms asked if he managed to taste one of the Taylor-made goodies, Andy replied, “She didn’t give me one, and the offense linemen definitely didn’t give me one!”

The coach also remarked on how Taylor is currently the woman of the hour across the world, loved for her catchy tunes and heartfelt lyrics.

“Since the Queen has passed away, she might be the most famous woman in the world. She’s so grounded for who she is,” the coach said.

After Andy told the world about Taylor making homemade treats for members of the Kansas City Chiefs, Pop-Tarts became desperate to see what Taylor’s version of the pastry was like.

In their full-page ad that appeared recently in The Kansas City Star’s newspaper, the company made a deal with Taylor, pledging to double a donation to Harvesters food bank in Kansas City if Taylor graces the world with her version of the Pop-Tarts pastry.

“So let’s make a deal,” the ad went on to say. “We are making a donation to Harvesters, a local Feeding America partner food bank, and will double it if you share (your version) of our recipe with the masses.”

Pop-Tarts also promised to offer Andy a bite of her version this time.

“And this time, we’ll make sure coach gets a bite. You in?” the ad said.

If a full-page ad in the local newspaper wasn’t enough, Pop-Tarts also decided to extend its plea on Instagram with a post that said, “Release the Recipe.”

“To KC’s most famous fan, we heard there’s a Pop-Tarts pastry (Your Version) and in its honor, we’re donating to @harvesters, a local Feeding America partner food bank. But if you #releasetherecipe, we’ll double our donation,” Pop-Tarts wrote on Instagram.

In the comments section, Harvesters expressed their gratitude and said they also wanted to take a peek at the recipe.

“We can’t thank you enough! We all want to know her recipe too…” Harvesters commented.

Taylor often swaps her guitar for a whisk and has offered some baked treats to her boyfriend Travis in the past. She once treated Travis to some homemade cinnamon rolls as a pre-game meal, according to former NFL quarterback Bernie Kosar.

“I was at [Kelce’s] house three hours before the game. We’re having a pre-game meal, and Taylor is so nice, she comes in by herself, and she’s so cool,” Bernie said on Audacy’s AM 560 Sports WQAM last December.

Bernie, who noted that he is a vegan, said he couldn’t resist trying some of the Grammy-winner’s cinnamon rolls.

“She made her homemade cinnamon rolls for Travis for a pre-game meal. I’m a juicer right now, trying to be vegan and gluten-free, but I absolutely had to sample some of that cinnamon roll on game day,” he said.

Bernie is just one of many big-shots that have praised the singer for her skills in the kitchen. Gigi Hadid once said in an interview with InStyle that her famous friend is an “exceptional cook” and even mentioned the Taylor’s Version dishes that she loves.

“When you’re not hosting, whose dinner party are you never missing, and what’s on the menu?” Gigi was asked by the outlet.

“Taylor Swift is an exceptional cook, and I love her. She also makes a really good bolognese sauce and a really good chili that I love,” Gigi said.

“So, I love to cook, but it’s also such a treat to get cooked for,” she continued. “And when you have friends that really also care about those special moments and the more intimate spaces and what can really come from putting an effort into making the time for that, I think that that’s when you start to find the friends that you really connect with, because you’re both working towards manifesting those really special moments.”

Singer Katy Perry also once raved about Taylor’s cookies in the past and called them “incredible.”

“They were soft. I couldn’t believe they weren’t store-bought.” Katy was quoted saying in an interview.

If being an amazing baker and award-winning singer wasn’t enough, Taylor has also shown that she’s a wonderful friend to her pals as well. For singer Selena Gomez’s 26th birthday in 2018, Taylor baked a cake for her that said, “Gomez or go home.”

“Will I let distance stop me from celebrating my best friend’s bday?” she wrote on social media as she showed off the homemade pink cake.

“I mean I could but why would I want 2” she added, making a special nod to Selena’s popular lyrics from the hit ‘Hands to Myself.’

After winning Song of The Year at the 66th Grammys for Barbie’s “What Was I Made For?”, there was one person Billie Eilish wanted to thank: her brother and co-writer, Finneas.

Taking to her Instagram account, the 22-year-old singer wrote, “Can’t even believe this jesuuuuuuus. Thank you to the @recordingacademy and to @finneas for being the best brother and musical partner in the entire world. This is crazy. Thank you thank you,” alongside a photo of the two smiling siblings holding their gilded gramophones.

The song also won the Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media earlier in the day, while Barbie The Album, produced by Mark Ronson, Brandon David, and Kevin Weaver, won the award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Media.

By that, we do of course mean instances when people had just one single job to do and they managed to blunder it up in the worst ways imaginable. And of course it was all documented online because the internet. You know what to do.

So, why are folks seemingly deliberately bad at their job? There are a number of reasons behind this.

The most clear-cut explanation is that the person is completely incompetent and is thinking with anything else other than their brain. And, sometimes, training and onboarding as well as meetings don’t really help. Because there is no cure for stupid. Well, education is, but you gotta consider the cost-benefit ratio.

Another thing that makes someone a bad employee is their tendency to do a no-show. What is worse is when they are also unreachable. Calling in, not picking up the phone, not responding to communication—all of these mean that the worker is irresponsible and not committed to the job they’ve been hired to do. And, sometimes, it’s just the case of a bad attitude. They don’t give a gaw-giggity about the customers, the merchandise, the quality, nothing. This often means they are unwilling to collaborate, let alone to do a good job, and even more so when their arrogance and asocialism doesn’t allow them to draw the right conclusions and to become better employees.

Besides being innately bad, there might also be external factors for why someone is bad at their job.

Being poorly paid is at the top of the list, but it becomes worse when the employee also feels like they are stuck there having to suffer the bad paycheck without any exit strategy.

Having a bad boss, being overly managed and underappreciated do not help in the quality of the work being done. Why do a good job if the boss isn’t going to be happy about it anyway? Either that, or it’s about quantity, not quality that pushes employees to assume different work priorities. That also likely kills the passion for work somewhere along the way.

There might also be other factors at play—factors like being stuck with poor job security or not being able to sort out your work-life balance.

An employee will never be a good one if their needs aren’t met to a sufficient degree, and that means reassuring them that their job is not at stake and encouraging self-care rather than min-maxing how things are done.

And if it’s none of the above, chances are it’s laziness.

While laziness breeds more laziness and it can become a habit, habits can also be broken. It’s not something people are born with, but rather a behavior that can be phased out. The idea is to learn to be industrious: do things that energize you (sleep, exercise, etc.), work first and reward yourself later, and visualize productiveness (make it tangible and reflect upon it). That’s at least a good start.
